This is our second release of Grenache from the beautiful Domaine Magellan. Magellan is situated about 35km south west of Montpellier and just south of Faugères. Bruno Lafon of Burgundy’s Comte Lafon fame moved into the area in 1999, intrigued with the Mediterranean climate and the soils of compact clay, sandstone and large rolling pebbles.
Our Grenache stems from a single plot, planted in the 1970s, farmed organically. The grapes were hand harvested and fermented in stainless steel,
seeing further aging in concrete and then a few months in older Burgundy barrels prior to bottling. A small amount of Syrah was added for further punch and structure.
The 2014 growing season was a tricky one. Drought stress was significant in the early part of the season, causing foliage issues. Yields were tricky as hail damage was extensive in some areas. And of course the monster flooding that took place very late
season. If you weren’t on top it, your grapes floated down the road.
Luckily for us our partner here is Bruno Lafon, who charged ahead in 2014 and delivered some very serious juice.
Our 2014 Grenache is honed in the same fashion as the 2013, but this year we see a little more power with regards to the fruit and certainly more density in its structure. While the wine remains playful and is still best served with a nice chill, this has a longer life ahead of it and should cellar well for a half dozen years….good luck keeping any that long.
Our name, As I Move From Here To There, came about via a busy travel year and interactions with friends. The past year brought about a great deal of change not only to my life, but also to close friends all over the world. We try hard to make things stable, to make them stick. We strive for consistency in our wines and yet have to fold under the reality that every new year each wine will be wonderfully full of its own strengths and weaknesses. And of course as the wines (and our people) age, so will come change. Stability is a tricky prospect; even a fruitless one to some degree as really nothing stays the same, not your life and certainly not your wine. As I Move From Here To There became a celebration of change, a celebration of new things, a celebration of you and I and how awesome it is to be alive and moving about.
